In an ever-changing business environment, it is important for issues
to be identified and solutions generated in a timely manner.
With the pressure of work and life commitments, it is not easy
to consider all aspects of an issue or proposed solution. As a result,
more often than not management is essentially patching the problem,
but not fixing it.
The “Six Thinking Hats” concept – created by
Edward de Bono, allows effective decisions to be made by focusing
the thought-generation process into six lateral-thinking areas referred
to as the Six Thinking Hats. The six hats approach to thought-generation
allows for issues to be fully considered. It ensures that full focus
is placed on a thought by following a logical flow: purpose and
focus, information, ideas, intuitive response, positive evaluation
and negative evaluation.
It is also a tool to ensure that management is in the right frame
of mind, and that all energies are collectively focused on particular
aspects of the thought.
We use the six thinking hats concept widely in our practice, and
it has allowed us to continually create solutions for both clients
and ourselves where solutions were not apparent . That is, the six
hats approach has assisted us to “think outside the square”.
